ForceWare Or Detonator Series?
Well this topic is discussed regularly on this forum and this STICKY
should help you get the best drivers for your video card and save you
time instead of writing a new thread and waiting for answers. First off
nVIDIA drivers have changed ever since the new 50.XX driver series came
out now they are called the ForceWare series (Recommended for FX and
6800 cards). The old 40.XX and lower drivers are called the Detonator
Series (Recommended for GeForce 4 and lower GeForce series cards).
But If You Play A New Game (Example:”Battlefield Vietnam or Doom3″) you
should always try out the new drivers for the best performance and
quality even if you own a GeForce 2. Since nVIDIA fixes bugs and
optimzes performance for the games in their new drivers. But if you
play old games stick with older drivers since they were optimzed by
nVIDIA back then. Detonator drivers can be good for your video card
BUT!! they also may not include new features that are in the NEW
forceware drivers such as (Example: new forceware drivers can let you
use profiles for your games to adjust AA and AF automatically and a new
modern menu… etc.. while old detonator drivers don’t have these new
features.) You’ll have to choose if you want these features or not.
Ether the New ForceWare or old Detonator Series can be downloaded @ The
Guru3d nVIDIA drivers section by clicking “Here” or The new ForceWare “WHQL” certified ones from nVIDIA by clicking “Here”

MODDED DRIVERS
There are modded ForceWare & Detonator series drivers such as the
StarStorm drivers made by Xaero001 a friendly fellow Guru3d member. And
there are Omega drivers made by Omegadrive if your video card likes the
modded drivers they’ll improve its performance or quality you can try
them out by going to the The Guru3d nVIDIA drivers section by clicking “Here” or http://www.omegacorner.com
Remember their is no guarantee if these drivers may improve your video
card’s performance or not it depends on your system. And if someone
says i got 1000 points more in 3dmark beware because everyones system
will react differently to different drivers.
BETA DRIVERS
Beta Drivers are sometimes WHQL Certified some of them can be the best
drivers you ever tried out or the worst you ever tried remember each
driver reacts differently to everyones syetem. Beta Drivers are great
because they can give you a little taste on what the upcoming offical
drivers will be like but they aren’t perfect and can cause some
stablity issues and bugs. Some Beta Drivers may give you errors on
games or may not run your game as your older drivers did. If so, change
immediately to your previous driver set and write your problem on our
nvidia driver forum to prevent this to happening to another person.
Also do not depend on benchmarks when testing new beta drivers use
actual games to test the beta drivers and if you like them stick with
them.
Trying Out New Or Beta Drivers Are Driving Me Crazy!!
This is one of the situations that people don’t like (including
myself). Wouldn’t it be great if nVIDIA could just tell you which
drivers are the best for your system? But thats not the case in this
world your going to have to try out new drivers and benchmark your fps
and keep an eye out in eye candy in those games to determine which
drivers are the best for your video card. It would also come in handy
to write your benchmark scores and its pros and cons while benchmarking
so ill make your life easier into narrowing down which drivers you’ll
want.
I Found The Drivers I Wantted!!! Now What Should I Choose Performance Or Quality??
First off this depends on your video card as well. An (Example: FX5700,
5800 or 5900 or 6800 series card) If your video card is one of these
spankin new ones go with quality and if you want you can use AA and AF
although if you use them it will cause you performance. If your video
card is ancient or slow (Example: GeForce FX 5200 & 5600 and
GeForce 4 or lower series) Use Performance and prevent from using AA
and AF.
Games Look Different With These Drivers!!!??
Although different drivers make your games look different such as more
better image quality or worst image quality it all depends on you if
you will be staying with them. You have to decide if you care about
eyecandy or performance. Ask yourself do you need those extra 20 fps or
more will it affect your gaming situation? (Example: Playing The Game
Online with over 32 people.)
Is There A Difference In Overclocking With Different Drivers?
Yes, every different driver you use will affect your overclocking potentials for your video card.
What Does “WHQL” Mean?
WHQL is the abbreviation of Windows Hardware Quality Labs this means
that it identifies hardware and software products that have been
designed and tested to meet microsoft standards for compatability with
the Windows® family of Operating Systems.
I hope this topic will help all my fellow Guru’s into choosing your
drivers wisely and know which ones are for you. If am missing anything
please PM me with some feedback and good luck into choosing which
driver is for your video card!!.
if you add what
drivers are the “best” for each nvidia card… that’s gonna kill the
“what’s the best driver for my ************ card?” threads
if you add that..
you have a vote from me for a sticky
I think this is sticky material anyway… Very thoughtout and organized. Good post
Drivers are completely random for each individual card…. but this could help find which series of drivers to use.
I think my best driver so far has been the 53.03 for benchmark scores but the newer 60.xx series have fixed gaming problems.
53.03 = no problems
56.72 = FASTER!!!!
44.03 ultra-fast in benchies
61.34
They’re flawless.
61.40 is the best for my card. 3532 in 3dmarks2001se. (Its not much…but its something
’til u enable AF from teh control panel in Halo or UT2k4.
xxx
added most common drivers that people experienced to be one of the greatest drivers for their video cards
xxx
I don’t own Halo but AF works just fine with UT2K4.
xxx
56.64 are the best for me .. atm
xxx
56.72 still…, ive
been tried 61.40 but I found weird colour in UT2K4 at Rustatorium map
& enabling AA + AF are smoother vision with 56.72
xxx
seems 2 me the 61.34 are the best so far, those 61.40 were evil
xxx
Cuz of Battlefield
vietnam im using 61.34 – yep thats true with ti4800. Strange but 56.72
are not good for me at all. 4x.xx i cant even play bfv. Maybe in some
games my fps is lower than with 5x.xx but new games just run better
with 61.34
So im waiting for official fw drivers.
xxx
Im So confused!
Arent Drivers Suppose To Be Better As Their Version Goes Higher? And I
Have A GeForce FX5600 And i Have V61.32 Intalled Is That Good? And How
Do You Intal Version 61.40? I Tried Intalling It Manualy But It Said It
Couldnt Find A Driver Thats Better And There Was No Setup.exe file
xxx
no bro because each driver is optimzed for each series card
its like you take your FX5600 and try to use new drivers with it in
like 4 years or something…the new drivers will only fix bugs and
thats it but your vc be supported BY THE DRIVERS but not by nvidia its
like microsoft in a way they support your windows for 4 years and then
thats it
xxx
Supremeboy Im using StarStorm 56.72, not ForceWare 56.72
xxx
DO not install 61.40,they are from the devil, they screwed my keyboard up and everything…..stupid evil drivers….
xxx
i used to always
use the 53.03Xq drivers and had great results in benchmarks, im using
61.32 and these are the only 61.xx series that doesnt cause the texture
problem in ut 2004, the only 3 i would recomend is
53.03xq
56.72
61.32
xxx
53.03 best overall for me…been the best since i put them on
xxx
I have a Gf 6800 Ultra, so which is currently the best driver for that? 61.40?
xxx
best one will be the new officials which are out soon
xxx
I changed from the
61.40 to the 61.32 drivers and improved my score in aquamark from 68360
to 69767 and I don’t get the out of scan range issues that popped up
when starting UT2k4 that I did with the 61.40 ( I have since found out
that wasn’t the driver it was having doublescan checked in the
options)… 61.11 and .12 borked my notepad.exe but they ran fine
otherwise. I haven’t benched them yet though.
I haven’t tweaked or overclocked anything yet as I just put this rig
together and want to wait till I water cool before trying that although
fiddling witht the 6800u I have found very little room to tweak as it
already runs at 400Mhz/1.1Ghz and I was unable to go beyond 456/1.13 I
will hopefully squeeze 4.1 out of the cpu and Iwill set the memory to
it’s fastest ( which I need to determine ( 2/2/2/5/4 I think). but
mainly what I want to know is there really a difference in drivers as
far as O/C’ing goes?
xxx
Ahhh so a 5600 is slow and ancient??
:’(
What drivers would be best suited for that?
xxx
I did some
benchmarking with 3mark 2003, and it turns out I get the best score
with the 56.72 drivers. Also tried the starstorms and some of the
recommended older drivers, as well as all the new betas (61.xx and
60.xx).
56.72 seems to be the best on my system
xxx
cool riksox, am very glad that this topic is helping every1
.
i’ve never heard of the overdrive drivers…but i’ll try them ill see
if they are worthy if they are i’ll post in the sticky thanks savage-xp
=).
Old Chieftain, there are differences between drivers when it comes to
O/C. Make me, i’ve post a couple of drivers in the sticky check’em out
and benchmark with them in games and see which ones are better for
you… and yes…sadly.. a 5600u is slow and about to be ancient since
nvidia took them off the line to be replaced with the 5700u.

so far I have tried although the 61.32 gave me good marks in aquamark the 61.45 I was wondering what is being tested in the Large Scene Vegatation now these are done without any tweaking or overclocking once I get

I’m switched to 61.71 and they’re awesome! Very nice performance increase in Far Cry, and everything else is running smooth.
xxx
dl the .71’s today
test em later
just gotta get aquamark of the pc at school….
stupid school
having a 2.2mb connection and pc’s with burners…..
stupid mix,
lol
xxx
i’m still using thw WHQL 57.xx. i run better with these than starstorm and/or the newest beta 61.xx.
cant benchmark none of the 6x.xx serie though…
xxx
so far the 61.71 seem to b stable, have found any bugs with any of my games, they seem better then 61.45
xxx
61.71 seems works
great for me. Still cannot beat my 3dm2003 score with SS56.72X (loose
300pts) but who cares abt benchmarking score while all games that I
played runs smoothly with high quality image: UTK2K4, FarCry,
Ravenshield, PainKiller. I think FW61.71 is the best NV driver for now.
But I do hope that there are no newest NV driver coming again at least for a week
xxx
Please Let me tell
u the story of Satan’s Drivers. I went from 52.16, which worked nicely,
to 56.56, then 56.72. the 56+57 r driving (pun
)
me INSANE. Every time I get to crucial part of a game or even just when
I’m having fun I get a “Paged error in a non -paged area” then it goes
on about nv4_disp.dll screwing up. Plz HELP, I thought that sticking to
the 5x.xx series would b safe n fast nsted im going slowly mad….
xxx
I have a GEForce 2 Ti videocard, and the best drivers I’ve used are the 53.06 X, they worked great.
When I used 56.72, AA didn’t work at all, neither 60.XX drivers, and
when tried 61.XX AA doesn’t work fine, when playing FIFA 2004, the menu
is separated ,a nd it seems like the screen should be something like
1200×400 to show it all, but ingame didn’t work so bad, but it was
certainly slow.
xxx
Tried the 61.36 WHQL and they gave a significant improvement in 3dmark 2003!
Seem to be good drivers for an fx5600.
xxx
I just downloaded
the new Forceware BETA 61.71 drivers with NView………and it works
great on my old MX400 vcard……..Nview has been enabled and it
actually has improved the picture colour quality when I’m
surfing………..I only use my computer for web and
email……………not gaming….anyway……….great drivers!!!!!
xxx
Updated the STICKY so it can help you guys to choose drivers more easier and fixed some things
xxx
Still using the 56.64 drivers for my GeForce FX 5200 card.. dunno if I should upgrade to the 61.xx version or not..
xxx
a friend of mine
just bought an AOpen FX5200 for her father. His father uses it for
digital picture editing, is there any difference between 2D IQ between
drivers? I suppose not, but who knows…
xxx
Im using 61.36, but
am considering moving back down to the 60 series…. i seem to be
having some problems with “serious windows errorrs” and such.
Otherwise, my performance in aquamark and 3dmark have actually been
higher.
xxx
the nvidia overdriveEQ 54.01 ,found in a thread on this site,
(savageXP) work and looks really nice on my fx5200 ultra.
don’t know about other games yet but “Syberia” looks
awsome with these.
xxx
guys, need some
help here… I have a medion Laptop with a geforcefx go5600. So far,
since the crappy driver that came with the computer was the 44.01
(prehistoric!) and can’t get a new one from Medion, I have been using
all this new drivers that come out but instead of go5600, I’m using
just the desktop version of fx5600… the funny thing is that right now
I’m using the 61.45 and get twice as much score in the benchmarks and
also games run unbelievable better. The 61.45 drivers were the last
ones that run on my laptop since the 61.71 and above give me a black
screen. Somebody know if there is some way to make them work on my
laptop, or where to get some of this latest drivers for my laptop?…
thanks a lot!…. by the way, I’m new in this formus!
xxx
I get incredible
benchmark results with Detonator 44.03, high above others. But I had
serious problems with new games. I tried and tested many drivers and
decided to use StarStorm 56.72, works great. I get about 20% increase
in shader performance.
xxx
61.71 totally
ruined my gaming experience on my inno3d 5950 ultra im about to try the
61.77’s but so far the 57.62 are best for me
xxx
right now I’m using the 61.34 drivers for my 6800? Do the other drivers perform better? Or should I try all of them for myself?
xxx
